Marcescence

Marcescent leaves hang on til spring;

dried paper sheaths

shrouding bare branches.

Rattling, prattling,

the pale yellow crisps cling,

whipping wildly in winter winds.

At last the sun marches forth.

New shoots awaken,

and the fragile shields are flung to earth.
